Roppongi in Tokyo is a famous night spot for foreigners and Japanese to hit the bars, dance clubs and lounges to drink the night away. Kaguwa, which is located about 5 minutes away from Roppongi station is a restaurant decorated in Edo period design. From the front entrance to the seating area, the decor has an old fashioned Edo era atmosphere. This restaurant serves a variety of special traditional Japanese and French courses, a variety of izakaya style foods as well original food items which will satisfy everyone’s tastes. There is even a buffet during the first show that has 8 different kinds of dishes.
The show features traditional Japanese music as well as modern Western music and blends Japanese martial arts, traditional dance, modern music and even comedy into its show.
The restaurant holds three shows which focus on Oiran or courtesan story lines with dance, costume and cultural introductions from that era. The latest show at 1:00 is a little bit more risque with men, women and transgender performers exploring the darker lives of the courtesans of Edo who danced, entertained and were women of pleasure for gentlemen of that time. The show also presents a lot of old fashioned Japanese culture and tragedy as well as love stories making the experience both heartwarming and wonderful.
Both the men and women have magnificent costumes and the stage has a unique open design that allows guests to feel immersed and part of the dances and performances. The restaurant opens an hour before the show and there is even a chance before and after the show to get pictures taken with the performers.
Depending on your budget you can dine on an extravagant Japanese style course or just get a simple set and still enjoy the amazing songs, dance and drama this show offers. Whether you decide to visit alone, on a date, in a small group of friends or even as a big group, Kaguwa is an experience you will never forget.
